They are, however, a relatively simple piece of equipment. Provided you learn to use them properly and with care, they will help you to enjoy a level and safe ride with your caravan. Weight distribution hitches of all types use the towbar hitch as a levering point and apply this leverage via outboard spring bars tensioned on the A-frame. Because the spring bars are attached at a short distance either side of the towball, they have to move forwards and backwards during turns. It is important to understand that weight distribution hitches do not allow an increased ball weight above that specified for the vehicle. It might then seem logical to assume that the ball weight has been reduced, but this is not the case. But when a weight distribution hitch is fitted, it requires for that same towbar assembly to twist forward. The towbar is therefore not dealing with less weight when a weight distribution hitch has been attached and tensioned. The kits come with either two spring bars or four, although even the lighter-duty two-spring-bar units typically specified for very light ball loads of about 60kg can be upgraded with an additional pair of spring bars as the ball head is the same it has locators for four spring bars. Not all weight distribution hitches of this type are equal so carefully check the specifications of the particular make you are interested in to ensure it will be able to transfer a sufficient ball load for your touring setup.

Each swaycontrol bracket is designed to inhibit sway both by holding the spring bar firmly in place and by ensuring that friction occurs anytime the bar moves along the surface of the bracket. Some premium weight distribution systems, like Reese SC, have specially designed swaycontrol brackets in place of traditional snapup brackets.. Only 4″ hole in truck bed for installation.
As the name implies, a weight distribution hitch distributes the trailer tongue weight evenly to all axles on the vehicle and trailer. This creates a smooth, level ride and optimal steering and braking control thanks to more weight on the front axle of the tow vehicle.
Adding spring bars to your towing system applies leverage, which transfers the load that is pushing down on the rear of your vehicle to all the axles on both your tow vehicle and your trailer, resulting in an even distribution of weight throughout. The result is a smooth, level ride, as well as the ability to tow the maximum capacity of your hitch. Selecting a Weight Distribution System The tongue weight rating is the most important factor in determining which size weight distribution system you should use.
If the bars of the system you choose are rated too high for your setup, they will create a rigid ride, which can result in a bouncing trailer. If, on the other hand, the bars are not rated high enough, the system will be unable to properly distribute the weight, rendering it virtually useless. To determine the proper weight rating for a weight distribution system, you must first determine your trailer’s tongue weight. Then add to that the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle.
These two measurements make up the tongue weight rating for a weight distribution system. Integrated Dependent Sway Control The Steadi-Flex weight distribution system works to stop trailer sway before it begins. This is achieved in 2 ways. First, the system head is designed to firmly hold the spring bars in place to provide tight resistance and help ensure that your trailer tracks behind your vehicle. Second, the spring bar brackets that mount on your trailer’s frame produce friction with the bars whenever any side-to-side motion occurs.
This keeps the bars from moving, also helping to hold your trailer in a straight line.

What generally happens when you tow a lot of weight is that the trailer pushes down on the tongue of the hitch and raises the front of the vehicle giving the front wheels less traction and you will experience reduced and sloppy steering. This is never a good thing. The last thing you want, while towing a three-ton trailer behind you, is to have less traction and steering. This can be very dangerous to you and the other drivers.
The best thing to help prevent this is to use a weight distribution hitch. You can pick up weight distribution hitches at most RV dealers and trailer hitch shops. Basically, a weight distribution hitch is made to transfer the weight of the trailer to the axles of the trailer and the tow vehicle and reduce the amount of weight on the tongue of the hitch.
How does it do that? Well it distributes the weight using equalizing bars and brackets. The brackets and spring bars lift the hitch point up so that it is parallel to the ground, and that way the weight is more evenly distributed. This will give you a more level ride as well as save your suspension and also give you better braking and steering control. But just because weight distribution hitches will give you more towing capacity, you still have to make sure your vehicle and hitch system can handle the load.
Check the hitch and your vehicles owners’ manual, and make sure you don’t exceed the maximum towing capacity of either.
Are You Trailering Safely? Out of habit, I glanced at her hitch – saw she wasn’t using weight-distribution bars. I strolled over, introduced myself, and said, “Do you know you’re pulling pounds with a pound hitch?

Anyway the big wild card on these things as was heavily discussed in a previous thread is how to hook it up to an aluminum v-nose trailer, without interfering with door, very limited tongue length, etc. So I welded this thing I will lovingly call “contraption” out of scraps I had laying around. The big mandrel bent square piece that is the meat of the whole thing is actually a chunk of a roll bar cut from an old commercial ZTR mower.
Contraption is held in position by 3 bolts, one thru the tongue, one thru each angled side brace. None of these bolts bear any weight, they just keep contraption from moving out of position.

Videos Additional Information The CURT weight distribution hitch is a specialized towing system that provides improved vehicle and trailer control by leveling the trailer and more evenly distributing its tongue weight across the trailer”s and vehicle”s axles. Weight distribution hitches are commonly used on travel trailers and campers but can also be applied to other large loads.
While a weight distribution hitch will increase the gross trailer weight capacity of most trailer hitches, the vehicle”s weight carrying capacity must be taken into consideration before towing a heavier trailer NOTE: Never exceed the lowest weight capacity of any towing component. This round bar weight distribution hitch features a heavy-duty formed head and round spring bars constructed from forged steel. It offers a gross trailer weight capacity up to 6, lbs.
It also includes hook-up brackets, spring bar safety chains and a pin and clip. To protect this hitch from scratching, chipping, rust and UV damage, it also comes with a durable black powder coat finish. A trailer ball must be purchased separately.
